BB

Le fait de changer BB de service néo-nat' nous permet de faire "connaissance" avec tous les appareils utilisés (à Auckland je n'avais pas été briefé car trop naze, Kevan l'avait été). BB a tout d'abord un respirateur (appelé CPAP), il respire seul mais on lui met pour éviter des apnées de sommeil et pour lui faciliter un peu la vie. Il a une sonde reliée à l'estomac (de la bouche), en effet le réflexe de succion et déglutition nécessaire pour téter ne vient qu'à la 37ème semaine, on lui injecte le contenu de mes seringues de lait par là. Il a une perf' à la main gauche pour l'hydrater et le nourrir un peu (il ne peut téter). Il a un capteur autour du pied qui mesure la saturation d'oxygène (100% étant parfait), et 2 capteurs sur la poitrine pour surveiller le battement du coeur (entre 120 et 180). BB est nu (avec la couche seulement - température de la couveuse ou plaque chauffante : 42 C). Le battement du coeur et la saturation d'oxygène sont reliées à un écran installé sur le côté de la couveuse ou de la plaque chauffante. Battements du coeur en vert, saturation d'oxygène en bleu. Ces chiffres changent tout le temps, bippent à chaque changement, quand la sonde se détache du pied, un bruit d'alarme se déclenche, on panique !. Au départ on flippe beaucoup, on a les yeux rivés sur l'écran, puis on s'y fait et n'y prend plus garde. Un BB prématuré ne sait pas conserver une température constante, c'est pour cela qu'il est installé sur une plaque chauffante (plus pratique pour les soins) ou une couveuse une fois son état étant un peu plus stable. Si BB est malade, il aura en plus une perf' avec des médicaments.
The new NICU allowed us to be introduced to all the machines around BB (in Auckland I haven't been advised of them). He has a CPAP (machine that helps him breathe), he doesn't need it but it puts less strain on his young lungs and avoids apnea. He has a feeding tube in his mouth, as the succion and swallowing reflex comes at 37 weeks only. We give him my syringe of milk through the tube. He has an IV on the left hand to hydrate and feed him. He has a captor on his foot for the oxygen saturation level (100% is perfect !) and 2 captors on his breast for the heart beats (between 120 and 180). BB is naked (except a nappy), heat inside the incubator or the bed-warmer: 42 C. The heart beats and oxygen level are sent to a screen beside or above the incubator or bed-warmer. These numbers change all the time, bip each time they change, each time one of the probe fell an alarm rings and panic !! At first we spend our time looking at the screen, being stressed out by the numbers and after a while we don't notice/hear anything any more. A premature BB can't control his temperature, that is why he needs to be in an incubator or a bed warmer (easier for care). If BB is sick, he will have another IV for medicine.
